2021 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Rumors

Despite that the popular mid-size truck has recently received a major update, we are getting various reports that suggest the 2021 Toyota Tacoma redesign. Of course, we don’t expect to see a complete overhaul only a year after the mid-cycle update, but these reports are clearly indicate something. It may be the fact that the recent refresh hasn’t brought the desired amount of changes. Also, keep in mind that the new Tundra is coming, so the smaller sibling could go in the same way pretty soon.

Finally, the competition became much tougher this year and could become even more, considering that the new Frontier is also coming. In any case, the current generation will remain for some more time. Still, a complete overhaul may happen sooner than we would expect, maybe already in a couple of years. The reasons are numerous, so these reports actually make sense.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Redesign Will Happen Pretty Soon

There are many reasons why we believe that the 2021 Toyota Tacoma redesign will happen quite soon. Of course, it won’t happen in the next year, but it could happen in a couple. One of the reasons is the fact that the competition is getting tougher and that Tacoma won’t be able to dominate anymore if we don’t see novelties. Therefore, we presume that production cycles won’t last that long anymore.

Another thing we should consider is that the new Tundra is on its way. The full-size truck is about to receive a complete overhaul and the interesting thing is that the new platform, codenamed F1, will be modular. Therefore, it will be used for the new Tacoma as well. In practice, this means that the new model won’t require that much time and resources, as the development of a completely new architecture would.

Finally, we didn’t see that many updates in this refresh. Of course, there are some pretty nice novelties but the redesign has remained largely the same. Practically, the only novelty is a new grille and LED lights, which clearly indicates that Toyota doesn’t plan to keep the current model in production for too long. When it comes to other novelties, they are mostly about new tech features that will easily carry on in the next-generation model.

What to Expect From This Redesign?

Although the 2021 Toyota Tacoma redesign won’t happen, it will a couple of years later. For that occasion, we count on big improvements. One of the novelties we could see is a change in terms of dimensions. The current Tacoma is by far the smallest model in the class and isn’t particularly spacious and comfortable. Therefore, the new model should become bigger. Of course, we count on the implementation of all kinds of new technologies. One of the most important goals will probably be an improvement in terms of towing and overall capabilities, considering that the current model lags behind most competitors. Therefore, a new powertrain would be required.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Redesign – Hybrid

The current model comes with two gasoline options in the offer. Both of them are reliable, but not particularly fuel-efficient. Most rivals feature better fuel economy, which is the main reason why everyone expects to see a hybrid Tacoma. Although most reports suggested diesel version at first, we doubt it will happen. Toyota engineers will rather focus on what they do best, and that is definitely hybrid powertrain.

At this point, there are two possibilities. The new version would either feature a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder based hybrid system. Most reports suggest a smaller and more efficient system, based on a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. It comes in pair with two electric motors and we can find this system in several models, including the new RAV4 and Highlander. We presume that the 2021 Toyota Tacoma redesign would bring a more powerful version, the one that powers the Highlander. It delivers around 240 horsepower, which isn’t bad for a mid-size truck at all, especially if we consider that the fuel economy would easily go way over 30 miles per gallon combined. For comparison, the Colorado Diesel returns around 26 mpg combined, which is a pretty large margin.

Still, the problem with this powertrain would be towing capacity. These days, 7.500 pounds is pretty much a standard among mid-size trucks, and the 4-cylinder hybrid systems probably wouldn’t be able to meet these numbers. Therefore, there is a big reason to believe in a V6-based hybrid. In that case, we count on a familiar setup that powers the LS 500h, which delivers 354 horsepower, which seems perfect for a truck like this.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Redesign or Any Other Changes?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma redesign definitely won’t happen. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t see changes in the next year. We may expect a couple of additions in terms of standard equipment, though the overall trim level organization will probably remain untouched. We expect to see the 2021 model year by the end of 2020.
