A diesel version of the famous truck has been an object of rumors and speculations for years. Unfortunately, we are still waiting. Even though most reports were suggesting an oil-burner for the next year, it looks like we will have to wait for a little bit longer. The next year will bring a lot of updates, but the diesel version is likely to be introduced a year later, like the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel. This clearly indicates that the current generation will carry on for some more time, despite its age and the fact that it’s by far the oldest model in the class.
That doesn’t stop Tundra from being quite popular among buyers who appreciate its unparalleled reliability. With an oil-burner, we presume that even some weak points of the current model will be solved, including things like fuel economy, towing capacity, etc. Expect to see 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel sometime in the second half of the next year.
2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel Engine
Of course, a new oil-burner will be the most important novelty of the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel. So far, this truck was available only with gasoline units. There are two V8 engines and both of them are great. You get plenty of power, strong performances, and unparalleled reliability. Unfortunately, these two engines are extremely thirsty. For example, the bigger 5.7-liter unit can’t do anything better than 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
Therefore, the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel would definitely be a great addition. Fuel economy would be much better, while the additional torque would also provide better-towing capacity. Although there were various suggestions about the new engine in the past, it now looks pretty certain that the new model will use a familiar unit from Cummins. It is a 5.0-liter V8 turbodiesel, which is good for about 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque. The same engine has been used in Nissan Titan XD for some time, and it turned out to be a great choice.
On the other side, the two gasoline units will carry on in the same way. Still, we won’t exclude a possibility to see some slight power boost with the upcoming update.
2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel Design
In terms of design characteristics, the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel won’t be any different than gasoline models. It will feature the same old design, which dates from 2008. Still, keep in mind that we saw a couple of updates so far and that another one is coming for the next year. For that occasion, Toyota prepares a lot of interesting changes and, without any doubt, they will carry on in the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel as well. The testing model has been spotted and the camouflage obviously shows which areas are about to get changes. Naturally, most of them will be visual, as we are about to see new aesthetic on both ends of the truck.
However, that won’t be all from the upcoming updates. We also count a fine amount of mechanical upgrades. Among them, probably the most notable will be a new rear suspension. At this point, details are still unavailable, but it looks like it will get some air components if we can rely on the latest reports.
On the inside, the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel will be boosted with a couple of nice novelties that will come with the upcoming update. Of course, the first one that comes to mind is a new infotainment system. We are about to see new software, as well as a new 8-inch touchscreen. That won’t be all, as the latest smartphone goodies will be offered as well. Of course, we are talking about things like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, etc.
Other than that, the 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel should carry on in a familiar way. The overall cabin layout won’t be much different. Count on the same dashboard design as in gasoline models, except, naturally, for the instrument cluster which will feature a little bit different gauges, adapted for oil-burners. Also, count on same cabin styles and bed sizes in the offer. On the other side, we still don’t know will this engine be in the offer for specific trim levels, are it will be available across the whole range.
Release Date and Price
We expect to see 2021 Toyota Tundra Diesel sometime in the second half of the next year. When it comes to the price, these models will probably go around 35.000 dollars in base variants. The competition will be pretty tough. All key rivals, like Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500 and Ford F-150 will also get diesel versions in the near future.
