The next generation of the popular truck is on its way and there’s no doubt it will come with plenty of novelties. New design and various technical solutions are things we can count on. Of course, a new powertrain is among these novelties. Besides the traditional gasoline engine, we expect to see 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid as well.
Allegedly, the testing model that has been spotted recently features a new hybrid powertrain. There’s no need to talk about all the benefits from the new powertrain, especially if we consider that the current model is thirstiest in the class. We expect the see 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid already in the next summer, along with standard gasoline models in the offer.
2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Powertrain
A hybrid version is probably the most interesting thing about this redesign. The current model has one huge drawback, and that is poor fuel economy, which goes around 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. With such numbers, we can’t expect from a new model to be competitive. Therefore, an electrified version will come to save the day.
The exact specs for the 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid are still unknown. However, most reports suggest that the new model will feature a system similar to one that can be found under the hood of Lexus LS 500h. This sedan features a twin-turbo V6 with around 300 horsepower and a couple of electric motors with a combined output of 177 hp. Due to different peak, total output goes 354 horsepower.
We expect that the new Tundra will feature far more power. That twin-turbo V6 definitely has much more potentials, while electric motors should be boosted as well. All in all, the latest reports suggest a pretty impressive output, which will go somewhere between 450 and 500 horsepower.
How about transmission?
Another thing that bothers us is the transmission. This hybrid powertrain comes in pair with a pretty interesting gearbox, called Multi Stage Hybrid System. Basically, that is a CVT gearbox, with embedded 4-speed automatic transmission. This unique combination simulates work of a 10-speed automatic transmission, which allows stepped access to power and torque. It works great in a couple of Lexus model, though we are not sure how this is going to work in a pickup truck. Therefore, we might see something more conventional in the 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid.
2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Design
Other than an electrified powertrain, the 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid shouldn’t be much different compared to standard gasoline models. It will feature pretty much the same design, which will be completely new, redesigned after 12 years. Therefore, count not just on new aesthetics, but on significant technology improvements as well. The new model will feature new rear suspension, with air components, as well as many other chassis upgrades. Also, it will come with a completely new interior, new technologies etc.

2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2021 Toyota Tundra Hybrid will come along with the rest of the lineup. That should happen sometime in the next year, probably the next summer, if we can rely on the latest reports. When it comes to the price, it seems too early for estimations. Still, we presume that the base price will go between 35.000 and 40.000 dollars.
