2021 Toyota Tundra Redesign, Hybrid, Specs

The capable and super-reliable Tundra is still a pretty good truck. However, it is time for some changes. The current generation has been around for almost 12 years, which is way too long by any standards, especially when you have to compete with uber-popular models like Ford F-150 or Ram 1500. Therefore, this redesign was expected to happen much earlier. Still, it’s always better ever than never, so the 2021 Toyota Tundra redesign is about to bring a fine portion of novelties, which will make this truck far more competitive. Changes are about to come in all aspects, starting from a completely new design, new powertrain and many more.

2021 Toyota Tundra Redesign Specs

The first that we should talk about is the exterior design. Of course, the new model will come with the completely new styling. The testing model has been spotted and it still wears a complete camouflage, which indicates there will be a lot of new aesthetical solutions. Still, the styling won’t be the only important thing about the 2021 Toyota Tundra redesign. We are about to see much more. Naturally, the new model will bring improvements in terms of weight reduction.

The new model will be more efficient, but also more capable and better to drive. One of the reasons is a new suspension setup. We still don’t know the details, but it looks like there is a completely new rear suspension to come. From what we know so far, a solid axle will remain, but we count on some air suspensions components.

2021 Toyota Tundra Gets Hybrid Powertrain

Another huge novelty that will come with the 2021 Toyota Tundra redesign is hybrid powertrain. The current V8 engine is probably the thirstiest in the class, so the Japanese manufacturer desperately needs something with higher mpg ratings. Considering that we are talking about the industry leader in terms of hybrid technology, such powertrain seems natural. According to the latest reports, we will see a system similar to one that can be found in the Lexus LS. It is a V6-based system, which delivers a total amount of 354 horsepower.

However, we would see significant upgrades in this case, particularly in terms of electric motors and battery, which are about to come with much more power and higher capacity. Latest estimations suggest a max output of around 450 horsepower, which is an amount that promises respectable numbers in terms of towing capacity.

Besides the new hybrid powertrain, we presume that the current V8 engine will remain in the offer. Still, it should come with a couple of modifications, in order to get higher mpg ratings and a little bit more horsepower. The current version is rated at 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, while the average fuel economy goes around 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

Diesel Engine – Yes or No?

In the past several months, we’ve been hearing about a diesel version of Tundra as well. Most of the rivals already have their oil-burner versions in the offer, or will get in the near future. In most cases, those are light six-cylinder units, oriented to fuel economy, rather than on some impressive towing capacity.

Initially, most reports were suggesting something different from Toyota, a large 5.0-liter turbodiesel from Cummins, the same one that powers Nissan Titan XD. Considering that the Titan XD isn’t very successful and that will be discontinued soon, we presume that Toyota will give up from this idea. Instead, we could see a six-cylinder diesel as well, though we believe that the Japanese manufacturer would rather offer another hybrid powertrain, with less power and better fuel economy.

New Interior

Another weak point of the current model is interior design. It looks outdated and also features outdated technology. So, we expect to see significant improvements from the 2021 Toyota Tundra redesign. First of all, the dashboard design should be far more attractive and with plenty of fine, soft-touch materials.

More importantly, we count on new tech features, starting from a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and other essentials. Another interesting thing about the 2021 Toyota Tundra redesign is about cab configurations. Latest reports are suggesting that Toyota could bring single-row models to the offer.

2021 Toyota Tundra Redesign Date

At this point, we can’t say when exactly the new model is going to hit the market, or to have a premiere, at least. We presume that both events will happen in the next year. Stay tuned for more details.
