2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel Rumors and Expectation

Tacoma is the most popular mid-size truck on the market by a large margin. However, that margin might become smaller if Toyota doesn’t come up with some new design solutions in the near future. The competition is getting stronger every day, particularly in terms of powertrain diversity. On the other side, the engine lineup is probably the weakest point of the current Tacoma. There are two gasoline engines, both good but also quite thirsty, not to mention that the towing capacity isn’t on the desired level. Therefore, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel sounds quite likely, despite everyone expects to see some form of electrification in the near future.

Still, the latest reports suggest that the hybrid version won’t come before the redesign. Considering the recent update, we may wait for the overhaul for a couple of more years. Therefore, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel sounds like a kind of bypass, considering that the Japanese manufacturer already has some decent oil-burners in its portfolio. Still, keep in mind that these paragraphs are based on rumors, so take this article with a reserve.

Of course, we will start this 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel article with possible engine options. A good thing to hear is that Toyota already has a couple of truck-capable diesel engines. Of course, we are talking about the units that power the iconic Hilux, which is mostly about diesel engine options.

The first engine that comes to mind is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which powers the Australian version of this pickup truck. It delivers 177 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, which seems more than enough for a pickup like Tacoma.

With this engine, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel would bring a lot of improvements compared to current gasoline options. This particularly refers to fuel economy, considering that gasoline units are quite thirsty. On the other side, this engine should be able to provide more than 25 mpg in a combined ride. The towing capacity seems even more important in this case and significant improvements are expected in this aspect as well. As Hilux can tow 7.700 pounds,  so we may expect similar numbers from the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel as well. These are pretty respectable numbers for the class. Moreover,  Chevy Colorado Diesel is the only mid-size truck in North America that can match these numbers at the moment.

Other Engine Options

There are a few more engines that may be used for this occasion. Both of them can be found under the hood of Hilux, on certain markets. The first one that comes to mind is a slightly bigger 3.0-liter turbodiesel, which delivers around 165 horsepower. Although slightly less powerful than the 2.8-liter unit, this engine proved itself as an impressively reliable and durable unit and these words are the other name for Toyota. Also, don’t exclude the possibility to see a smaller 2.4-liter engine, which powers the European version of Hilux, which isn’t as powerful as the two aforementioned units but offers pretty amazing mpg ratings in return.

Other than the engine, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel wouldn’t feature any notable difference. The base design should be pretty much the same, though a couple of visual tweaks are possible, to accentuate the model’s oil-burner character. Of course, we will see all the features that came with the recent update. This includes a bunch of new tech features, as well as some small styling tweaks.

Also, there are chances to see 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel in the TRD Pro version. This is an off-road variant of the popular pickup truck. It comes with various upgrades, particularly in terms of mechanics. There is a new suspension setup, with new Fox shocks, higher ground clearance and similar things. Also, there are several distinctive styling details, as well as the new Army Green color options. At this point, it is hard to say whether the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel TRD seems likely or not.

Hybrid Will Come After the Redesign

While the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Diesel seems quite likely, it looks that the electrified version won’t come before the complete overhaul. That would mean a couple of more years. At this point, there are two possibilities for the Tacoma hybrid. One is a more efficient four-cylinder engine-based system, similar to one that powers the new Highlander. On the other side, there is also a chance to see Toyota with something more capable, something that would provide significantly better towing capacity and overall performances. That would probably be a V6-based system, with more than 350 horsepower, according to some reports.

  1. I believe that Toyota is working on perfecting Ducted Fuel injection for diesels, this may reduce emission controls by a lot, no need for diesel particulate filter nor DEF fluid injection. Burn rate is much better with way less soot, this is good for Toyota since they have a major lawsuit going on over diesel particulate filters on Hilix in australia now. Limp mode is not a good thing when your way out in the australian desert, this has happened to quite a few australians, limp mode to tow mode, in middle of nowhere due to def and diesel particulate failures. The basic diesel is very reliable but the emission controls are horrible for reliability.
